Tutorial Walkthrough
This tutorial guides participants through a decision-support design process using the Typology of Decision-Making Tasks. The goal is to move from an open-ended domain scenario to a structured decision model, and then from that model to a visualization design.
The structure follows the logic of the Double-Diamond Design Methodology design process:

- Problem Definition: understand, decompose, and structure the decision-making problem.
- Design Construction: translate the structured decision model into visualization and interaction ideas.
Participants should not begin by sketching dashboards. The first goal is to understand the decision problem. The design comes later.
Overview of the Tutorial Flow
Participants will work through a shared scenario and move through a sequence of steps that take them from problem formulation to prototype design. The tutorial is organized into two main sessions of 90 minutes each, separated by a 30-minute break.
Scenario
The session begins with the scenario that participants will use throughout the tutorial.
Session 1: Modeling Decisions with the Typology
- Step 1 - Identify Goal
- Step 2 - Decompose
- Step 3 - Define Dependencies
- Problem Formulation Discussion
This session focuses on moving from an open-ended scenario to a decision diagram built with choose, activate, and create.
Break
The two sessions are separated by a 30-minute break.
Session 2: Designing with the Typology
This session focuses on translating the decision diagram into a prototype design.
The decision diagram acts as the bridge between the two sessions. It is not just a representation of the problem; it becomes a blueprint for design.
